Welcome to the first issue of our monthly bulletin for school leaders and teachers — practical school solutions, classroom ideas that work, and, in future issues, voices from schools around the world. Each month we look closely at one solution and how teachers put it to work.
Spotlight: ExploreLearning Gizmos
Gizmos is a library of hundreds of interactive maths and science simulations, each with ready-made lesson materials and assessment questions. Instead of reading about a circuit, a food web or plate tectonics, pupils manipulate one on screen — changing variables, running the experiment again, and watching what happens.
Why simulations lift science teaching
- They make the invisible visible. Electron flow, molecular collisions, geological time — processes no classroom can otherwise show — become something pupils can watch and control.
- They make experiments fast, safe and repeatable. A pupil can run an investigation five times in ten minutes, change one variable at a time, and learn from a failed run without cost or risk.
- They reward prediction. The most powerful moment in a simulation lesson is the pause before the run: what do you think will happen, and why?
Five ways teachers bring science to life with Gizmos
- Predict — test — explain. Before touching the simulation, pupils commit to a written prediction. They then test it, and explain any gap between prediction and result. The gap is where the learning lives.
- One variable at a time. Use the simulation to model fair testing itself: change only the ramp angle, only the concentration, only the resistance — and chart what happens.
- Pre-lab rehearsal. Run the on-screen version of a practical before the real bench work. Pupils arrive at the real experiment knowing what they are looking for, so the practical becomes confirmation rather than confusion.
- Phenomena you cannot bring to class. Genetics across generations, orbital motion, natural selection, half-life — simulations let pupils experiment on systems that are too big, too slow or too dangerous for a classroom.
- Built-in checks for understanding. Each Gizmo ships with assessment questions — a quick, low-stakes way to see who has grasped the concept before moving on.
